Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats

(Section A-VI / 2-2 of the STCW’95 Code) Course: “mastery of speedboats”, meets the minimum mandatory requirements set out in the STCW Code. This course module provides training for candidates who will responsibly steer a speedboat. The course module is realized according to the IMO recommendations model 1.24 – “Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats”.

Course Duration: 2 days

Attendance: Minimum 4 people per day

Participants will be able and trained to take responsibility for running fast rescue boats, during or after the onset of bad weather and rough seas, to operate the engines of these boats professionally, performing search methods – rescue through the correct use of equipment which also includes communication and signaling between a lifeboat, a helicopter and a ship.

Part A: Course Framework

  • Aims – This model course aims to provide the training for candidates to launch and take charge of a fast rescue boat, in accordance with Section A-V1/2 of the STCW Code.
  • Objective

This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section AV1/2, Table A-VI/2-2. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in fast rescue boats, a trainee will be competent to handle and take charge such boats during or after launch in adverse weather and sea conditions. They will also be able to operate a fast rescue boat engine.

Trainees will know the correct use of all locating devices, including communication and signaling equipment between the rescue boat and a helicopter and the ship; and how to carry out search patterns.

  • Entry standards – For admission to the course seafarers must be medically fit and the holder of a certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats in accordance with Regulation V1/2, paragraph 1 of STCW 1995.
  • Course certificate – On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a certificate may be issued, in accordance with Regulation V1/2, paragraph 2, certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/2-2 of STCW 1995.

Such a certificate may be issued only by centers approved by the Administration.
